Plot Summary

Now in its seventh year, Junior Eurovision, or J-ESC as it is known on the continent, is very much the little sibling of its world renowned forerunner. Despite being watched by twelve million people worldwide from Europe to as far as Australia and Japan and with increasing numbers of countries taking part each year, it remains somewhat more of a home-grown affair than the adult competition, as the rules stipulate that all of the ten to fifteen year old amateur contestants must compose and write their own entries and sing them in their national language. Not knowing who would make it through all seventeen participating countries national selections, filmmakers travelled from Belarus to the Ukraine, Cyprus to Belgium and Malta to Sweden to see just whom each nation selected to represent them in Rotterdam at the final of Junior Eurovision 2007. As the results came in they began to follow fourteen year old Marina from Bulgaria part of the group “Bon Bon”, fifteen year olds Eva, Matthieu, Laurence and Mirek from Belgium with their band Trust, thirteen year old Mariam from Georgia, and ten year old Giorgos from Cyprus.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A cast of cute kids and quirky teens make for an unorthodox but endearing documentary. – Dan Jolin, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Johnson serves the story well and strikes a welcome tone by taking his subjects just seriously enough. Very enjoyable - but no more than an extended 'Pop Idol' for cinema. – Dave Calhoun, Time Out, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It is physically impossible to emerge from this film wearing anything other than a smile as big as an upside-down rainbow. Congratulations - and jubilations! – Ali Catterall, Film4, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The documentary Sounds Like Teen Spirit has a thoroughly dismal premise but it is a remarkable and deeply affecting watch. – James Christopher, Times [UK], Jun 24, 2010
