Plot Summary

With music performances by Beck, Beth Orton, Hank Williams III, Union 13, and Billy Higgins, plus cameos from Laura Prepon, Ione Sky, and Elliot Smith, Southlander is a comically uncanny Rock and Roll party adventure. Chance (Rory Cochrane), a hapless LA musician, has found his ticket to fame, fortune and romance with the coveted keyboard, the '69 Moletron. When it goes missing, Chance must reclaim it by working his way through The Southlander, the ultimate buy/sell classified paper for musicians in Southern California.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Too fragmentary and too devoted to its self-referential ethos to transcend its insular vision of rock's lunatic fringe. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Southlander does have enough energy and wit to make a solid music video. But that leaves us with about 80 minutes too many. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Steve Hanft ... shot Southlander on digital video for what looks like $99.99. But who needs a big budget when you have a quirky script, an energetic cast and a soundtrack that features Union 13, the Blondes, Future Pigeon and Omega Man? – V.A. Musetto, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010
