Customer Reviews
VERY Very Good, But, ultimately, NOT Spectacular
As the first review said, if you liked The Usual Suspects, you'll like this. That's accurate. This is is an Indie Film made on a $250K budget. For that kind of money, it's an AMAZINGLY GOOD movie. While watching it, I kept thinking "this feels like like a David Mamet script." It does, and the writer deserves credit. He's also one of the main characters and does a surprisingly job there as well. The primary Supporting Character (Mandla) also does a very good job. Although it seems like "damning with faint praise," this movie is ultimately NOT as GREAT as Reservoir Dogs & The Usual Suspects were. I originally rented it because I needed a time-killer for a long flight and iTunes has priced it at $1. Standalone was actually a "very good find" and definitely worth the "flyer" for $1. If you want to get an idea of how MUCH quality can be wrung out of a $250k budget or how GOOD an Indie film can be, give this a shot. It's a little uneven in spots, but good entertainment nonetheless.
Standalone stands alone as a really bad film
Not sure what the two other reviewers were smoking, but I rented StandAlone (for 99 cents) because their reviews were positive. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm no film critic, but we just thought the first part of the film was ridiculous. (We were snickering). I say the first part because I turned it off before we hit the 15 minute mark; I chalked it up as the 99 cent risk that did not pan out. It's obviously a very low budget movie and I wanted to give it a chance; however, the foul language was the nail in the coffin for us. It's really ironic, the iTune's tips for writing good reviews say "do not use profanity or overtly sexual language," but it obviously does not have a problem when the movies it promotes do not adhere to this. This movie has enough crude language in its first 15 minutes to last for the whole movie. If you like large quantities of the f--- word, you may really like this movie!
Great indie movie with a spectacular ending
The movie is well crafted and tells a great story with a shocking ending. If you liked Usual Suspects, Seven or Reservoir Dogs, you should like Standalone.
