Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: [It's] like attending your high-school class's 10th reunion at Caesar's Palace. Most of the faces are familiar, but the decor has little relationship to anything you've ever seen before.
Rotten: Nothing but a long day's journey into ennui.
Fresh: The expensive effects (under supervision of Douglas Trumbull) are the secret of this film, and the amazing wizardry throughout would appear to justify the whopping budget.
Fresh: Star Trek - The Motion Picture: Director's Edition is no 2001 (its obvious inspiration -- a fact that is more evident here than ever before), but it represents thought-provoking, well constructed science fiction.

Space, The Final Frontier!!!
The remastering of this classic movie was very enjoyable. They added new computer animation to finish the unfinished parts of the movie. I just saw the movie STAR TREK that just came out today, on May 8th, and it was stunning. I think it lived up to this movie.
Is this all that it is? Is there nothing more?
The Director's Edition is definitely better than the theatrical version simply because I didn't fall asleep watching it...the second time. I still fell sleept the first time, but only because I had stayed up until 1:00 AM and had already taken my medication. The film has a very intellectually stimulating storyline, and the music is nothing short of amazing, it was even nominated for an oscar (although I don't know if it won any oscars however). The concept behind V'GER is very interesting and it truly does make you think. Now despite all of this the film does seem to lag in it's first quarter, but after the Enterprise takes off, it ain't so boring. It's a very interesting and thought provoking film, provided that you don't turn it off before the 30 minute mark.
This is Great!!!!
I love this movie and I do not get why some people do not, the Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home are better but this movie is still one of my favorite Trek films. I love seeing the Enterprise refit and The Director's Edition is so cool with remaster scenes and audio format. If you love Star Trek then yes you should love this movie. I would pick The Director's Edition over the original theatrical version because this is what the director intended for the movie to look like.
