Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [It's] like attending your high-school class's 10th reunion at Caesar's Palace. Most of the faces are familiar, but the decor has little relationship to anything you've ever seen before. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Nothing but a long day's journey into ennui. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The expensive effects (under supervision of Douglas Trumbull) are the secret of this film, and the amazing wizardry throughout would appear to justify the whopping budget. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Star Trek - The Motion Picture: Director's Edition is no 2001 (its obvious inspiration -- a fact that is more evident here than ever before), but it represents thought-provoking, well constructed science fiction. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jul 7, 2010

Sigh...So exciting UNTIL....

It is great Paramount came on-board with their films and that the Star Trek series was part of that...ALAS these are the original releases NOT the special edition versions that were released. Not a huge deal on the other films, BUT a real big deal on this film. Robert Wise, the director, went back and supervised a real beautiful completion of the first film. Since it was rushed into theaters, many effect shots and elements were not quite there. Well Wise really improved this film when they went back and added some great missing effects and tightened up a few areas. So BOO to you Paramount for not releasing that version here. Not cool.

WRONG VERSION! NOT DIRECTOR'S EDITION!

The Director's Edition or nothing! When the film first came out it wasn't completed, a few years ago Robert Wise went back and finished this film. It was released on DVD in his completed form. What iTunes has online is the original unfinished version of the film that was originally shown in theaters! Unlike the Star Wars special editions, or other recuts of movies, Star Trek The Motion Picture really became a great move in it's Director's Edition! Amazon is selling The Director's Edition for download, iTunes should be as well! I used to hate this film until the Director's Edition, now it's one of my favorites! Don't settle for the wrong version! iTunes/Paramount, give us the Director's Edition!

Once Again, Not what I thought I was Purchasing

This is the original, not the remastered. I purchased the original series under the same impression, only to find out those, too, were not all remastered. If I wanted to watch the original, I would have busted out my old betamax. Please (itunes) get it right, or don't bother.
