Plot Summary

This movie has been modified by the distributor for its original theatrical version. This critically acclaimed winner of the Robert Altman Award at the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards explores the unlikely friendship between two women living in the San Fernando Valley, Jane (Dree Hemingway in her first leading role) an aimless 21 year-old aspiring actress and Sadie (Besedka Johnson), an 85 year-old widow. While Jane spends her days getting high with her dysfunctional roommates, Sadie passes her time alone often at the local bingo parlor. After their worlds collide at a yard sale, a tenuous but tender relationship starts to emerge between the two as Jane protects a potentially volatile secret. Director Sean Baker captures the rhythms of everyday life with a rare authenticity in this provocative, unpredictable and surprisingly sweet story of human connection.

Starlet - Must See!

One of the best films of the year, and one of the most underrated!

A beautiful story about friendship, life, and the fragility of relationships. What breakthrough performances! This movie gives me hope for independent cinema. There are still good stories to be told out there...

Great Movie

but… "modified from the theater version due to graphic content"??

Why? It is already "unrated" so I am not sure what the editing got them.

I applaude iTunes for finally being honest in the descriptions and stating that the movie has been altered for content but the "award winning" movie is the one the director showed not the one that is made available here.

Still a good movie but would recommend renting only until the real version becomes available.

Hot! Cold! and everything in between.

This is a very good film, It's pacing was very refreshing, no swish pans or shaky cam. The action happens in the fame and the Director allows the actors to carry the scene to the end.
The 20 something girl that has a life she enjoys but wants something more and a elderly woman that fits the bill, for what ever reason be it guilt, no family or boredom.
The original cut has some controversy with a few shots dealing with the Adult Film industry but don't let that stop you from this fine film, It's necessary to the story that you see the life she lives when she is at work as well as at home.
The ending is vague but if you watch closely at the end you'll see that whats not said can be understood between friends when they truly let you into there lives.
The cast was perfect, Dree Hemingway, Besedka Johnson each perfumed exceptionally in there first staring rolls. Dree Hemingway as the fun loving actress Jane, that really has no responsibility but for her self and her dog Starlet, that is until she stumbles across Sadie. Her reasons are her own, she feels drawn to help Sadie and even help her live her dreams. "Sadie" Besedka Johnson, in her first and only roll Is a woman that has locked herself off from the world for years and fights to keep it that way because of the fear that she may let some one in just to lose them again.
Unfortunately Besedka Johnson passed shortly after the film was made. She moved to California in the 50's to be an actress and it finally happened, sometimes dreams do come true even if it takes a whole life to get there… Take the time to enjoy this film, you won't regret it.
