Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: As written by Ed Neumeier, who also wrote Verhoeven's much tighter Robocop, Starship Troopers never gets over its 180-degree swivel from teen-age love story to murderous destruction. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Director Paul Verhoeven is back in his subversively nimble RoboCop groove with the uproariously cheeky Starship Troopers. – Mike Clark, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A jaw-dropping experience, so rigorously one-dimensional and free from even the pretense of intelligence it's hard not to be astonished and even mesmerized by what is on the screen. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jan 28, 2006

Fresh: Manages to be both fun and shocking -- sometimes in the same shot. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Mar 7, 2001

Probably The Best Bad Movie Ever Made...

If you are looking for a movie that makes you think, move on. If you are looking for a movie that fulfills that urge to watch lots of explosions, extreme violence, and spaceships blowing up giant bugs... you have come to the right place. In the world of science fiction, Robert Heinleins book "Starship Troopers" is an intriguing, political commentary on the future of our world, the role our military plays, and the bond between friends, family and brothers in arms. It is an amazing book and I highly recommend it. This movie has virtually nothing in common with the book, and should be viewed as a movie that is VERY loosely based on a very VERY good book. Do not expect high cinema, expect schlock, at its grandest scale. Apparently, Paul Verhoeven decided that the budget was better spent on special effects, rather than actors... or writers... or really anything that makes a movie really, truly good. The effects are masterfully created by Tippet Studios, and were nominated for an academy award. Its really the first time the technology called "massive" was seen on screen, which makes it possible to have thousands and thousands of 3d characters in one shot, and paved the way for "The Lord of the Rings" epic battle scenes. Bottom line, the effects are top notch. Is the movie good? No. Is the movie fun? Hell yes. Is the acting good? Absolutely not. Is there gratuitous nudity? Yes, yes there is. Is it well written? Not in the least. Do people get dismembered? You bet they do! Here is the lowdown: Starship Troopers, is bad. Very, very, very bad. But its the bad that makes it so, so good!

So Sick!!

This is such a bomb movie and its awesome that itunes has this available to buy. Anyone whos intersested in awesome action movies, this is it! Considering how old this is now, it has sick special effects. Don't think of maybe getting this, just go ahead and grab it, totally worth every penny!!

God I love this movie

Nice to see Hollywood satirize how the media's propaganda can twist a society into accepting anything the government dishes out. A great anti-war movie disguised as an action-packed sci-fi movie with effects that still hold up. Anyone with a brain can see how patriotic this film is in it's depiction of how dangerous it can be when we all a accept staus quo without questioning anything. Although different from the book, it is faithful in it's depiction of fascism hiding behind the flag, patriotism and the news. A must see for someone who enjoys sci-fi but also likes to read between the lines.
