Plot Summary

Academy Award-winning screen icons Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn shine in a classic film about marriage, politics and the pursuit of the American dream. When idealistic businessman Grant Matthews (Tracy) is chosen to run for the Presidency, he is caught between the ruthless ambition of a string-pulling newspaper owner and the integrity of his devoted wife (Hepburn). But just as Matthews embraces his ultimate goal, he realizes that he may have lost touch with the American people. Masterfully directed by three-time Academy Award winner Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life, It Happened One Night), State of the Union is a timeless crowd pleaser with a stellar supporting cast including Angela Lansbury, Van Johnson and Adolphe Menjou.

Customer Reviews

Great Movie!

A story of politics corrupting a person who was once noble, very apt for today's times. Very funny and a good story. I was amused to see a younger Angela Lansberry (Don't know if I spelled her name right) in this.

State of the Union

A must watch for all voters who think the issues, politics, and the influence of so called special interest of yester year were far different then today. What amazes me is how similar Angela Lansbury's character of a powerful newspaper woman is to Katheryn Graham of the Washington Post.

Relevant for Today

I watched this movie for the first time many many years ago. In fact, I was just a little girl and enamored with the very rebellious Katherine Hepburn. I found the mysterious relationship she and Spencer Tracy had intriguing to say the least. What I did not pay attention to was the message of the movie. It was on television recently and I sat down and watched the movie again for the first time in years. I was struck by just how much voters could learn today from the movie. I highly recommend it for all 2012 potential voters. Unfortunately, I don't foresee the ending of this movie as a reality for today. But it will give voters some insight into the political machine.
