Plot Summary
Second generation surfing documentarian Dana Brown (son to Bruce Brown, who directed The Endless Summer 2) strikes out with his own original piece of filmmaking with his 2003 ode to the world's surfing enthusiasts entitled Step Into Liquid. Part travelogue, and part attempt to redefine surfing's image, Brown travels to some of the ordinary surfing locales — such as Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States — as well as some rather unexpected ones, including the west coast of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan to Easter Island to a secular surfing school in Ireland. While in these diverse locations, Brown interviews the numerous souls whose lives have been taken over by the lure of surfing, ranging from seasoned professionals to casual hobbyists, in an attempt to dispel the myth of surfers being perpetually stoned slackers. Step Into Liquid was selected to screen at a handful of film festivals in 2003, including the Nodance Film Festival in Park City, UT.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Part of the appeal is the underlying theme of the torch being passed between generations.
Fresh: An awe-inspiring survey of global surf culture.
Fresh: Serves up enough action and passion to stay afloat, but at the end of the day it's just not the perfect ride those earlier films were.
Rotten: While Step Into Liquid has charming and even breathtaking moments, it definitely flags after the halfway point.

Stepping into liquid is like stepping into a different reality.
Although Dana Brown's surf epic Step Into Liquid was not the "hardcore" surf video most people expected. But in many MANY ways, this was for the better. Dana Brown's Step Into Liquid is truly a movie of epic porpotions. It not only shows surfing, but the different people of surfing, the surfing culture, and most importantly HOW SURFING EFFECTS PEOPLES LIVES! Truly something few surf movies have done in the past. Very few times in my life have i seen a sports movie able to rival Warren Miller, but Dana Brown sure comes close. Bravo.
Great Visuals
I live in a land locked state and this movie makes me want to move to the coast and take up surfing everytime I watch it. They speak about and show how there is a common bond to all people around the world and that is the oceans and the wave. Being a videographer, this has some of the best water shots I have ever seen. Dana Brown and crew pulled off some amazing shots and really made the person watching it feel like they were there.
by far one of the best
not only is this a great documentary, i personally think it is also one of the best movies ever. it's touching and influential and at the same time, in the classic way of the surfers, completely chill and relaxed. admittedly i'm very critical of documentaries and don't like them very much because they tend to fall short of the mark, but this is just like any classic hollywood movie filled with action and adventure and yet another level completely throughout the entire movie that emphasizes not just the importance of surfing to so many people but how it is so influential and touching all around the world
