Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: No one goes to a "Step Up" movie for the plot or the romance. Only the dancing matters here.
Rotten: There isn't a franchise around that matches the kids' moves in the Step Up series. We just need a better reason to dance along.
Rotten: Though the location-specific choreography looks like it could be impressive, the film's frantic cutting style makes it difficult to simply enjoy bodies moving in space.
Fresh: While dance purists won't be impressed by the energetic and athletic choreography -- the dancers have clearly learned routines but not necessarily technique -- date-movie audiences will likely want to go out dancing afterward themselves, and that's fun.

IT'S DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN
Ever since the very first "Step Up" flick back in 2006, every single film in the franchise has had the exact same premise with the exact same ending. Two attractive young dancers meet by chance, quickly fall head over heels in love, break up for a ridiculously short amount of time, then fall back in love again. Oh yeah, and everyone dances. And as you can probably guess, "Step Up Revolution" is hardly any different from its predecessors, but you'd be surprised at the entertainment value this movie holds. Granted, the story is a bland mess and the characters are about as memorable as a piece of moldy bread, but the dance sequences are a treat to watch on their own. They're very well-choreographed and beautifully designed, and it would've been great if the movie had just been composed of those entire scenes playing back-to-back. Unfortunately, the plot is so predictable and generic and the acting is so bland and wooden that it almost feels like a chore to sit through all the drama just to get to the energetic performances. But if you actually like the film for its message of "standing up for what's right", then good for you. I just thought the whole moral of the story was way too contrived and drawn out to be taken seriously. Corniness aside, I enjoyed "Step Up Revolution" for its inspired dance sequences, but not much else. Unless you're a dedicated fan of the franchise and/or any form of terrible acting, chances are you won't like this flick. As for everyone else, this should be right up your alley. It's worth a one-time rent, but definitely not a buy.
