Plot Summary
A non-religious hair stylist in her mid-20s, Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) receives a rosary from her mother and begins speaking in other voices, being attacked by unseen forces, and developing stigmata, bleeding wounds on her wrists, feet and side that are associated with the Passion of Christ. A Vatican Cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) examines her, and sends Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) to investigate Frankie to ascertain if the events and stigmata are indeed a miracle from God. However, Father Andrew quickly finds that the need to verify the Devine is far less important than saving Frankie’s life. Score by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A derivative, pretentious rock video with a half-cocked, quote-unquote religious melodrama.
Rotten: Tom Lazarus and Rick Ramage should be ashamed to have written such nonsense!
Rotten: All the Aramaic in the world can't save it from its own pounding slickness.
Rotten: Stigmata is possibly the funniest movie ever made about Catholicism.

wake up
should be science fiction not thriller ……….
This is one movie you'll never forget...
I love this movie. I saw it when it first came out and to this day I'll find myself watching it. I think this movie is the The Exocist of our time. The soundtrack is a killer too. It's one of my favorite CD's, unfortuntly I can't find it on I-Tunes.
It is campy but
When this first released I was excited. When I watched it I fell in love with it. After ALL these years I am still in love with this film.
So Rotten Tomatos waited 10 years to make a review about this film? Get out of here with those shenanigans.
The soundtrack is great. The acting is what you would expect it to be, and even though it may not hold up what some people might think?
I have to say this film has better acting than 90% of what's turned out today. The story isn't disjointed, it's not hard to follow.
If you are unsure of this film, just rent it. But I loved it. But that's probably because Gabriel Bryne is easy on the eyes, and his character is very interesting in a sympathic way.
