Plot Summary

"Still of the Night" is a Hitchcockian thriller from director Robert Benton. Roy Scheider portrays a Manhattan psychiatrist who is suspected of killing one of his patients. The police do not know if he's not telling them - claiming the immunity of the doctor-patient relationship. Scheider himself considers that the dead man's mistress (Meryl Streep) may be the killer. Scheider's quiet bachelor life is penetrated by Streep's wiles, and he can't understand her interest. Streep is a vivacious, chain-smoking blonde, who looks as if she could "explode" at any provocation. Scheider is determined to get to the bottom of the murder and find out if Streep is the killer. His obsession is accompanied by nightmares of flashing knives. Scheider plans his moves to get closer and closer to Streep until she breaks.

Really surprisingly good

I was expecting it to be a scary movie and Meryl Streep to be the obvious killer, its amazing and you get so wrapped up in the romance and the plot, it's very good and I'm very surpirsed I liked it because I'm not a scary movie kind of person, but it's much more than that.

Simple Yet Great Mystery Movie

Refreshingly simple plot, relatively slow-paced, and features two outstanding performances by Scheider and Streep in their prime. In fact, Meryl Streep never looked better, and she's perfectly cast and coiffed in her role. And Roy Scheider's portrayal of a somewhat guilt-ridden psychiatrist who falls for Streep makes this a mystery combined with just the right dose of romance, rather than an "over-the-top," obsessive love story. When this film came out in 1982 it was generally condemned or vastly underated by critics, but over time it has just gotten better. Jessica Tandy also does an outstanding job -- although brief -- with her role as the psychiatrist mother of Scheider. Look for just the right element of dark, subtle humor by the character played by Josef Sommer, always great in a "villainous" role, who also turns in a great performance. And the beautiful opening theme and film score by John Kandor truly contributes so very much to evoke just the right kind of mood to make this a great, pleasingly understated, and intriguing psychological thriller.
