Plot Summary

The ads for The Stone Pillow tended to suggest that this TV movie was Lucille Ball's dramatic debut—completely ignoring the fact that Ball had started out as a "straight" actress in the 1930s who only occasionally played comedy until I Love Lucy came along. Whatever the case, the Ball we see in Stone Pillow is a cranky bag lady, fiercely independent and violently resistant to do-gooders who try to alter her homeless status. Daphne Zuniga plays an idealistic social worker who tries to get Ball off the streets. It is only after watching several of her fellow indigents die where they sleep that Ball agrees to give up her "stone pillow." Though meant to be intensely dramatic, The Stone Pillow looks more like an elongated I Love Lucy sketch in which Ball dresses up like a tramp in order to meet Red Skelton (or somebody).

Stone Pillow

I remember seeing this movie years ago when it came out and enjoying it immensly, and as I recall Ms. Ball wanted people to remember that she was a dramatic actress. i also recall at the time she put herself in danger health wise because wnated to do her own stunts, sleeping in the rain, sleeping outside and that she did join up with some homeless people prior to production to see how they actually lived, so to say that the movie was a elongated gag, I kinda feel is an insult to the person wanted to remind us that she could do more than comedy, but it's just my opinion.

good movie

I liked this movie a lot. There were some sad parts, the only problem was that the killed some of the sad parts by having someone say something stupid. But, other than that its really, pretty good. It makes you think, how some of us treat the homeless... It sure has changed my way of thinking... good movie...

Great Movie

I saw this movie in 1985 when it was first on TV. From living in the city, I think it is a pretty decent portrayal of the homeless situation in the country. And even though the movie is almost 20 years old, I feel it is still relevant to today. As a kid, this movie haunted me to see how homeless people live every day. I also liked that they "interviewed" several other homeless people during the course of the movie so you saw several perspectives of how people became homeless. The one thing I walked away from this movie with was that anyone, at any time, could end up like this! This movie inspired me to try and help the homeless and as a youth leader for a church youth group, to get my kids involved as well. Every year we do a sleepout for homelessness, where our youth members sleep outside in cardboard boxes with minimal comforts (no phones, no games....) other than a bathroom, a blanket and a pillow. We participate in a fast during the time as well so they also must endure being hungry while doing this. And from talking to the kids that have done our sleepout for homelessness, they have a very different view on the the homeless situation.
