Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Sometimes seems less like storytelling than something the otherwise compelling director needed to get off his chest. – Bob Graham, San Francisco Chronicle, Feb 8, 2002

Fresh: One of recent memory's most thoughtful films about art, ethics, and the cost of moral compromise. – Loren King, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Despite [Solondz's] undeniable talent, however manipulative, his stories are too sour and mean-spirited for my taste. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Apr 27, 2007

Fresh: By not averting his eyes, Solondz forces us to consider the unthinkable, the unacceptable, the unmentionable. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Censored

Don't buy it has a scene that's censored with a big red box. Good movie though.

Terrible movie

I watched this movie because I love Belle and Sebastian's music. The movie was so stereotyped that I was shocked. The Hispanics, the Afroamerican and the Jews are represented like out of a 1933 Germany caricature. I felt bad for spending my time and money with this movie. In terms of format, it is also totally unbalanced: it devotes 10 minutes to "fiction" and then over an hour to "nonfiction". The myth of the writer and the passive student taking it just because… I didn't get it. Highly unrecommended!
