Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A long slog with little payoff. – Sam Adams, Los Angeles Times, Mar 5, 2009

Rotten: Proving that there's no statute of limitations on lousy ideas, director Andrzej Bartkowiak's attempted franchise expansion returns to the Capcom motherlode that produced the worst movie in the entire Jean-Claude Van Damme filmography. – Jim Ridley, Village Voice, Sep 30, 2010

Rotten: This is a movie for the overcaffeinated, undereducated teenager in all of us. – Michael Hardy, Boston Globe, Nov 24, 2011

Rotten: I'd say this is roughly 20 times better than the first Street Fighter movie. It's still a waste of time, but unlike the game, it's over in 95 minutes. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Nowhere near as bad as people like to pretend.

It's a basic action/martial arts/video game flick...which means it can be entertaining to people (like me) who enjoy the pros and cons on the genre. The difference this time is that it stars the iconic Chun Li, which is a welcome change of pace (seriously, how many times do we need to watch Ryu battling his demons in a movie?) Are there cheesy moments? Sure. I already told you it's an action/martial arts/video game flick. That's simply a part of the genre. Thankfully it's nowhere near as cheesy as the old Street Fighter live action film with Van Damme. No, Bison doesn't float around in a red clown suit with a massive cartoon grin like he does in the games...because that would look stupid in live action. No, Chun doesn't wear a replica of her blue dress and bounce of invisible walls like she does in the games...because that would look stupid in live action. That's not to say that there are NO references to the game, because there are lots. But, let's be real here: Some things simply cannot be translated into live action. If you understand this, then you just might be capable of enjoying an action/martial arts flick with a strong, respectable female lead. There really aren't enough of those, sadly. So, loosen up, and enjoy. And, don't forget to laugh at Nash's overlydramatic delivery.
