Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Except for Ms. Janney's monstrous mother and an Alzheimer's-afflicted grandmother (Polly Bergen), "Struck by Lightning" gives its characters no dimension.
Rotten: In his screenwriting debut, Glee's gifted Chris Colfer, 22, proves he can lace a line with sass and soul.
Rotten: A mediocre coming-of-age indie.
Rotten: If only "Struck by Lightning" had a sharper, stronger perspective, it might have made more of its conceit.

Even more than I hoped!
I'm a huge fan of Chris Colfer, and I've been waiting for this movie since I knew he was filming it in 2011. Now that I've finally gotten a chance to see it, I was worried that the movie would be terrible, which would be a bummer, because I really do love everything Chris does, but I didn't want my love of his work to make me biased and cloud my judgement of the film. I was also worried that all the rave reviews I've heard from online would be clouded by their dedication to Chris.
Boy, was I wrong! From the moment the movie started, I was completely enthralled. The writing was excellent. The cast was excellent. The directing was excellent. I finished the movie in tears, and as soon as it was done, I wanted to start it all over again.
Chris Colfer has a very bright future ahead of him if he keeps delivering screenplays like this one.
A Damaged but Ambitious Boy
Not a typical high school movie. This isn't a story about romance or trying to fit in or trying to get laid -- although there is plenty of discussion about relationships and conformity and sex. It's a witty comedy and a thoughtful tragedy. It's a story about how short and precious life is, and how important it is to spend your time on earth being loudly and unapologetically YOURSELF, going after what you want instead of what other people think you should have. It's about broken families and the broken people in them. It’s about how far you would go to achieve your dream. But it’s fun! Really, really lighthearted and funny, even though the film is bookended by an untimely death and deals with heavy themes.
A fantastic first movie from young writer/star Chris Colfer, filled with unforgettable performances by a strong cast (who all agreed to do this indie film for very little money just because they loved the script and wanted to work with Colfer, which should tell you a lot about how good it is).
5 stars! Highly recommended for EVERYONE -- especially for anyone who’s ever been told “no” by society and wanted to give society the finger in return.
Struck by Lightening
Awesome movie. It was funny, sad, and amazing. The acting was great Chris Colfer really branched out from glee.
