Plot Summary

He's good enough, he's smart enough and doggone it, people like him! He's Stuart Smalley (Al Franken), and he's bringing his nutty New Age act to the big screen in a heartwarming comedy that's "flat-out amazing" (F.X. Feeney, L.A. Weekly) Stuart's "shame spiral" begins when his cable-access show, Daily Affirmation With Stuart Smalley, is abruptly canceled. Then Stuart's favorite aunt dies, sending him home to his co-dependent mother, alcoholic dad, pot-smoking brother and overeating sister. But there's a big heart beating underneath that loud cardigan sweater, and with the help of his best friend and Al-Anon sponsor (Laura San Giacomo), Stuart takes on the armies of denial that threaten his family and future. Get with the program and enjoy Stuart Saves His Family, the movie that puts the fun back in dysfunctional!

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The plotting is surprisingly banal, involving even talk of a property easement and turning Stuart into the executor of a relative's estate. And the relatives' problems are taken semi-seriously, which is more than this lightweight film can handle. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: It isn't good enough, it isn't smart enough, and, doggone it, most people won't like Stuart Saves His Family. – Joe Leydon, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It was much funnier when we didn't see Stuart's family. And, if we have to see them, it would have been much funnier if they were strait-laced '50s sitcom types. – Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times, May 14, 2008

Rotten: All in all, it's a misfire -- but a misfire that's more interesting than a lot of successes. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, May 14, 2008

Bad at politics, but Al Franken created a gem with this movie! Great comedy, surprisingly touching!

This movie walks a fine line between satarizing 12 step progams and "self-help" gurus and finding the basic truths in them as well. This is a text book dysfunctional family and it is played both for laughs and for tears. The caricatures are dead on and sometimes frighteningly real...but also funny and touching. I loved this movie - the acting by all the major characters is dead on and the direction is perfect in it's timing. I've shared this movie with many friends. People either tend to love it or absolutely hate it. If you liked the Stuart Smalley character on SNL, you'll love this film. If you have any dysfuntion in your family (don't we all!?) and are willing to laugh at yourself, you'll LOVE this movie. I give it two BIG thumbs up!!

Loved it!

I suppose this film might seem too campy or cliche for someone who doesn't come from a campy cliche family from hell. Myself, I loved it! I know a few people who can relate to many moments in the film, and watching this movie is a great form of therapy when my crazy family becomes too overwhelming. This and my daily affirmations said into the mirror...

So close to home it's freaky !!!

This movie is so funny because it is so true! Down to the brother who is the "golden boy/ pot head"
My favorite part is when Stuart asks his sister "Get to a Pound Cake" to help prevent her from furthering her nervous break Down! I love love this hidden gem of a movie! It's toooooooo funny and will make u "Ok" with your family at least for a little while ;)
