Plot Summary

Joel McCrea and sultry Veronica Lake star in this starkly realistic yet highly humorous satire from Oscar® winning writer-director Preston Sturges. McCrea plays successful Hollywood director John L. Sullivan, an idealist who believes you can't accurately direct a screen tragedy unless you live it first. Disguising himself as a bum, Sullivan sets off to see America from the bottom up. Along the way he befriends a beautiful but cynical stray (Veronica Lake), and learns about the cruelty of life among the less fortunate. In the midst of the brutality and despair, the young director makes a valuable discovery - that what the downtrodden need most is laughter. Hailed by critics as Preston Sturges' masterpiece, Sullivan's Travels reveals the wonderful insight and artistry of one of Hollywood's finest directors.

Marvelous on every level

The very definition of 'classic,' "Sullivan's Travels" is considered by many to be the best film about filmmaking itself. Yet what makes it so wonderful is the biting dialogue and taut script that are executed perfectly by the actors and the film's director, the amazing Preston Sturges. No matter that it's 'ancient'--you owe it to yourself to see this film.

Best. Movie. Ever.

...im serious. It's such a great film. I'm in love with all Preston Sturges films. The message is fantastic and the diologue is witty. It's pretty much everything a movie should be and more. The last line is beyond amazing and I think is the best in movie history. This film really makes you step back and take a good look at yourself and society, even though its more than 60 years old. Veronica Lake is beautiful and Joel McCrea is swoon-worthy. Best. Movie. Ever.

Review of Sullivan's Travels

Both my wife and I very much enjoyed Sullivan's Travels. It was the first Preston Sturges movie that we had seen. It was filled with interesting concepts, very clever dialogue, and settings that took us both back to our childhoods. For us, the American Film Institute made no mistake when they included it in their 100 Best Films.
