Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Genova conveys its strongest themes through insinuation, and modulates its shifting moods through Winterbottom's precisely calibrated DV processing. – Rob Nelson, Variety, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Whether you go with this idea might depend on how many times you've seen it before, in sentimental American films. The fact that the film is more artful doesn't make the ghost of the mother less of a cliche. – Paul Byrnes, Sydney Morning Herald, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Genova fails to provide the view with much that is satisfying and instead accomplishes only a superficial examination of grief and the way people respond. – Des Partridge, Courier Mail (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: An elegant, traumatic but ultimately rewarding tale that will leave you glad to have made the trip. – Giles Hardie, Unknown2, Jun 24, 2010

Summer in Genoa

I found this movie to be incredibly well-acted. All performances stood out, but especially that given by Perla Haney-Jardine. Wow. Be forewarned, the story does not possess much narrative thrust. This is about three members of a family becoming isolated from one another as they deal with grief. As such it is a set of character studies, more than a story, per se, but it is sooo subtle and so right. Much isn't being said, and the undercurrents of guilt and recrimination and avoidance are hinted at. The use of the alleys and streets of Genoa give an undercurrent of menace that provides the story with a fairy tale quality. Finally, the ending does not tie things up in a tidy manner. It represents the possibility of this family nurturing each other once again, but only that. Personally, I liked it. Recovery from loss (whether through death, divorce, etc.) does not have a tidy resolution. Overall, very similar to The Boys are Back, but to my mind more true to life.

indie film...

Before you set out to watch it, ask yourself, "self? do I like indie films?" If you enjoy movies from like Focus Features, or Fox's Searchlight, then you'll probably be a fan, if not, then I'm sure you won't like this one. I thought it rocked, honestly. It was super original, the acting was freako amazing, Colin Firth's facial expressions at his wife's funeral were legendary. The lil girl, who plays Uma and David's daughter in Kill Bill vol 2, was AMAZING. I was like, wow, she is powerful and totally adorable. The teenage girl, was just the same, you can feel what she's going through. As far as the ending, I thought it ended great and you could see where it was "leading you" to believe what their future held. All in all, you really gotta be a fan of slow-burning, indie, art house films, if not, you'll fall asleep and just be frustrated.

Summer in Genoa

This is one of those movies for me where I've invested so much time I don't want to quit watching hoping it will get better. It never did! It wasn't the acting, or the story, the movie was just boring and never went anywhere.
