Plot Summary

Former high school cheerleading captain Rose Lorkowski (Academy-Award®-nominee Amy Adams) is a thirty-something single mother who cleans houses for a living. Wanting to send her trouble-making eight-year-old son Oscar to a private school, Rose decides to take her married lover's (Steve Zahn) advice and get into the "lucrative" business of crime scene cleanup. Rose convinces her disillusioned, underachieving sister Norah (Golden-Globe®-winner Emily Blunt) who is still living at home with their dad Joe (Academy-Award®-winner Alan Arkin), to join her in the enterprise, which she calls "Sunshine Cleaning." The sisters begin to find meaning in their function to "help" in some way in the aftermath of a loss, just as the job stirs up memories of their own mother's death. Their priorities and goals tested, Rose and Norah face hard challenges as they strive to improve their lives.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Taken on its own terms, though, it's a solid indie effort with plenty of nice character strokes by screenwriter Megan Holley and razor-sharp performances by Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Jeffs makes a good fist of the direction and Blunt proves that she can do comedy, but it's Adams's comforting, charismatic central turn which really gives the film its lift. – David Jenkins, Time Out, Nov 16, 2011

Fresh: Ultimately, the film is too neat, and too cloyingly sweet to tackle anything resembling real life. – Kevin Maher, Times [UK], Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Instead of something fresh and funny, this film is as formulaic and empty as any Hollywood blockbuster. – Cosmo Landesman, Times [UK], Jul 7, 2010

wow

i can't believe no one has written a review for this movie it was fantastic! amy adams, emily blunt and alan arkin really mix perfectly to make a very very disturbing but also very funny, very good and very sweet movie. this movie wasn't necessarily gross, but it sent chills up my spine when i watched it. i would definitely buy it and you should see it if you're over 17. it's not a movie for children or people who are easily freaked out. but AMAZING work! i can't wait to watch it again

Had no idea

this would be such a good movie. It is really in no way a comedy so dont expect that when you watch it. That is a mistake on iTunes part. Its hard to describe why I liked this movie so much other than its just plain good. It is a slowish movie but still keeps your attention and makes you want to watch more. The characters are very realistic, you really believe them. Especially Amy Adams. Beyond being amazingly beautiful, her acting was spot on. Im pretty sure that her ability to create such a real, and relatable character exploded my brain. I mean relatable in that she reacts the way you want her too and the way that a person should, even her facial expressions are so righteous that my own face melted off of me. I did not expect that from her cuz ive never seen her in such a serious role but she nailed it. Watch this movie, dont listen to the people who say it is boring. I think they were expecting a comedy. Watch out though cuz your brain might explode too...and your face could melt.

AMAZING movie!!

I watched this with my parents for teh fun of it, and it was SO worth it. Every moment of this movie is perfection. Buyyy it! :)
