Plot Summary
Inspired by the best-selling DC comic The Death of Superman, the animated feature Superman Doomsday finds the Man of Steel locked in mortal combat with an intergalactic serial killer named Doomsday. Never before have two rivals of such equal footing squared off in a duel to the death that could determine the fate of an entire planet. Will Superman summon the strength needed to save Metropolis by making the ultimate sacrifice, or could it be that the denizens of this bustling city are about to witness the demise of the greatest protector they ever had?
Customer Reviews
This movie is getting over-bashed
The truth is if you go in expecting 90 minutes of romp and stomp DBZ-esque action, yeah, you're going to be VERY disappointed. To the nay-sayers' credit, the title is a little misleading like that, but what makes this movie shines is how it subtly etches out the importance of Superman's connection to humanity (via "Clark Kent") with a sort of "path not taken" story. That's not to say it's incredibly deep - it's not. But it's both solid and enjoyable storytelling and well worth a 3 dollar rental.
Read the comic books.
Based on the Life and Death of Superman comic book stories from years ago, the movie cuts major plot points like the arrival of other Supermen and the reaction of other superheroes. As comic book adaptations go, this is especially weak. The animation is just average and the voice acting is pretty bad. Maybe Dad and his 10 year old son can watch this together, but it's not a family picture, nor is it something that's going to make grown up geeks like me happy. I wish I had seen other reviews before I saw this.
This movie's for grown-ups
(Warning, this may contain spoilers).... I can see how some might be disappointed by this movie: much of it is done in a very understated style. The film is largely about Superman's relationships, not about his battle with Doomsday, and that makes it a story for a more mature audience. Some of the best writing and acting of the film is done by Lois when she's trying to articulate to Ma Kent her sense of loss at Superman's passing. (Very nice bit of acting by Anne Heche.) The voice acting is outstanding, yet it all fits into the understated style of the film and the story. The theme of relationships continues as Luthor realizes (now that Supes is gone) that Superman defined Luthor and without him that definition is missing. A nice touch for Luthor was how the artists gave him James Marsters' gaunt cheeks, allowing us to see some of the actor behind the voice. One thing I was rather hoping to see was more of Earth's superheroes coming to mourn Superman, but as with all things that move from the printed/drawn page to the big screen, compromises must be made. Fitting the sprawling Death of Superman story into an 80-minute movie required some adjustments, and in the context of itself this story works fine.
