Plot Summary
Supernova chronicles the search and rescue patrol of a deep space medical ship and its six-member crew. When their vessel, the Nightingale 229, answers an emergency distress signal from a comet mining operation in a distant galaxy, the crew soon finds itself in danger from mysterious young man they rescue, the alien artifact he's smuggled aboard, and the gravitational pull of a giant star about to go supernova -- the most massive explosion in the universe.

Not as bad as you think
I had a few mixed feelings about this movie when I first saw it. I expected it to be pretty bad, and with the typical opening space-ship shot (can we ever beat the original Star Wars for that?) my hopes sank. Fortunately, it becomes more interesting as the movie progresses, and the alien artifact manifests some unique effects and concepts. The overall effects are well done and the tone was managed well, reminding me a bit of Event Horizon. The plot seesaws at the beginning and feels a bit patched together. The original director quit and was replaced partway through production. It improves, though. Some of the acting was not very convincing. Lou Diamond Philips shows he's way out of his element here and Peter Facinelli (Karl Larson in the movie) does only a fair job of evolving into the film's threatening entity. Angela Basset does a good job, though, and James Spader's performance is quite good. Overall, the movie moves forward well, has some suspense and builds up tension to the end. If you can ignore the obvious clichés that seem to plague ALL sci-fi films these days (the ship has something broken that requires an EVA... don't they ALL?!?) and a couple of glaring holes, it's a pretty enjoyable, watchable film.
Good effects, strange plot, hard to swallow
The plot is just weird, but the special effects are great, and the only reason to watch this. It treads visual territory that hasn't really been explored before, so it's definitely worth a rental. I wouldn't pay 10 bucks though, you'll only watch it once.
Thomas Lee's Secret Identity
This movie was directed by the great Walter Hill (the original Alien), who took his name off it, then re-edited by the legendary Francis Ford Copolla (The Godfather), who also refused to take credit! So this turkey has an interesting pedigree. Worth checking out
