Plot Summary

Liam's mom is in prison and due to be released in time for his sixteenth birthday. Dreaming of the family life he never had, Liam is determined to make things different when his mother returns- which also entails studying beyond the reach of her loser ex- boyfriend and mean-spirited father. But creating a new life requires cash, and at 16 there are very few options for employment. It is not long before Liam and his friends' crazy schemes get him in over his head and into all sorts of trouble. Finding himself in too deep, he knows he should walk away but just can't let go.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's a harsh, terrible story of a rite of passage, a boy's love and a journey to hell, and it's so brilliantly told that we feel the cold above and the all-consuming flames beneath. – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The casting is impeccable, the dialogue raw and the impenetrable Glaswegian brogue is wisely translated with English subtitles. – Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 30, 2003

Fresh: Compston's performance and the downer milieu, presented with appropriate paint-peeling profanity, are more than enough to keep an audience riveted and ultimately moved close to tears. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A grim and gripping story. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010
