Plot Summary

Vincent Perez (The Crow, City of Angels) and Rachel Weisz (Stealing Beauty) star with Ian McKellen and Kathy Bates in this passionate film about two star-crossed lovers. Amy Foster, considered a simpleton by some and a witch by others, is accused of conjuring the fierce storm which causes a shipwreck. Only one man survives and is immediately drawn to strange Amy. I liked it but it was depressing

I enjoyed the movie but the plot was depressing. I could relate to the obstacles that lay before the main characters, who are different and therefore unaccepted by the narrow minded society they live in. They find consolation in the passion they feel for each other but their love is lived in isolation and they remain on the margins of society. The most interesting character is the doctor whose love for the shipwrecked Yangko, makes him jealous of Amy and blinds him to her qualities. Though a tragic movie, it ends with a note of hope, when the kind-hearted doctor realizes that he has unfairly judged Amy... I would probably not have bought this movie had it been possible to rent it.

Loved this film.

Really sweet love story about two outsiders who find solace in one another. Rachel Weiz is fantastic, and makes you really want to be as strong as Amy Foster. Vincent Perez is probably the most attractive man to lay eyes on. He plays Yanko, the Russian immigrant so well, and earnestly. You truly believe all of the characters in this film. Also, more impressive, Perez is a French-speaking actor, and probably hadn't been speaking English for more than a few years by the time this film was shot. And in this film he plays a man who at first only speaks Russian and then learns English...his accent is fantastic! Very sad story, but worthwhile for the superb acting.
