Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: In Peter Hanson's dishy documentary Tales From the Script, 46 screenwriters gab agreeably about the tribulations of their profession. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Manages to be fun and informative without tipping too far into the dark side; it favors war stories over horror stories. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: One of Tales' strongest points is made accidentally: Its huge cast of interviewees consists of one Asian speaker, one Latino, three African-Americans, and five women - one of whom pulls double-duty as a woman of color. – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: One suspects that writers in Tales from the Script might have more to say about the art and the joy of creating, but Hanson seems less interested in their craft, spending much of the film allowing the writers to vent about the industry. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Jul 19, 2010

Should Be Mandatory for All Film Students

Witty, insightful, and depressingly realistic at times, Tales from the Script is a must-see documentary for all film students, or anyone who considers themselves a serious moviegoer. This documentary shows how much writers write as opposed to how many of their scripts make it to screen, how much of their screenplay makes it to screen, what happens when they're red hot, and what happens when they're not. Writers are the unsung heroes of a film. They tell the actors what to say. They inspire directors to direct. They paint a picture with words. They are the visionaries.
