Plot Summary

Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall headlines this touching story of a down-and-out country singer named Mac and the young widow (Tess Harper) he meets in a small Texas town. But as their relationship blossoms, Mac’s years of hard living resurface when his music star ex-wife (Betty Buckley) appears in a nearby town, bringing his estranged daughter (Ellen Barkin) with her. Will Mac’s painful past lead him toward an uncertain future – or will he find a way to move past his sorrow and start a fresh new life?

Terrific move- why isn't the soundtrack on ITunes???

This is a great movie starring Tess Harper, Robert Duvall, Betty Buckley and a young Ellen Barkin. Robert Duvall does his own singing and guitar playing in this, and while he's no Eric Clapton, he is extraordinary in the part he plays. Betty Buckley sings a spectacular song, "Over You", which sadly is unavailable anywhere. The soundtrack is not even made in CD form. No idea why. It is the story of a man's fight with alcoholism, a love story, and has a tragedy in it bound to make you cry. The performances were Oscar-worthy. It captures the time and place it was set in beautifully (out in the country, in 1983), and while it is obviously outdated, it is somehow a charming picture to watch for that reason. It was a simpler time, and this movie is a snapshot of that.

Moving film watched Tender Mercies many times...

I have watched this film many times and it is so moving. There are "small scenes" that make references to Viet Nam that tug at your heart strings. If you pause the film, some scenes look like a beautiful run down Wyeth painting. The song at the very end during the credits sums it up...listen to the words about throwing it all away...despite the sad aspects, there is something beautiful...ultimately peaceful about this unusual film that is thankfully "not Hollywood".

Tender Mercies

I, too would love to have the music soundtrack to this movie. I was astonished when I realized that Robert Duvall sang so well! Will it ever be possible to get the soundtrack? I loved the subtle Christian threads throughout the movie. A great movie and a great performance by Robert Duvall.
