Plot Summary

An angry and wounded Iraq War vet moves into San Francisco seedy Tenderloin neighborhood to lose himself in drinking, but finds instead a closer relationship with his young son, a tenement hotel full of exquisitely odd characters, and the red-hot Skyler. For over a hundred years the Tenderloin district has endured as a place to go when all other options are off the table. A block from Neiman Marcus shoppers picking through Prada and pearls, are the lowest rents in town and the loosest rules. Immigrants, recovering addicts, artists, students and outcasts for no apparent reason and those who pray on them all call this place home. A character portrait indie feature with a irresistible honesty of a beautiful relationship between a father and his son against all odds. In the tradition of The Messenger, Brothers and The Pursuit of Happiness.

Tenderloin

This is what some would call a "little" movie, but only because it's an independent film made on a relatively small budget. The movie itself is BIG. It has some colorful, complex characters who are all sympathetic--I love a film where all the characters are likable, even the ones who aren't pretty. The story is believable and down-to-earth. There's no need to suspend one's disbelief in this movie. The actor who plays the one child in the film is amazing--the chemistry between him and his on-screen dad is very real and believable. all the actors inhabit their characters with ease and skill. Although the story is autobiographical there's something in it that we can all relate to--themes of alienation, loneliness, being confronted with dilemmas that seem impossible no matter which option we choose. It's not a movie for young kids but very suitable for teens and young adults. You may have never heard of this film before you see it but it will stay with you long after the closing credits have rolled.

Tenderloin

Tenderloin is a pretty cool father-son story. I mean, there's a lot more to it, but that is what got me. I expected a sleazy doc -type film. It isn't. The actors are unknown but real. my guess is somebody who lived there wrote it. If you're looking for Hollywood glitz you got the wrong movie. The Asian girl is drop-dead hot. The lead actor looks like he's been through a couple of tours somewhere bad, and then there is a truly amazing scene where you see what war cost him. Watch it and you'll think that this movie is no act. It's a little too heavy on the comraderie among this group of characters, but in a place like that where you really need your friends I guess it could be that way.

Tenderloin

This movie tells a real story in a way that hits you squarely in the gut. I recommend it.
