Fresh: Beneath the poker face of this wickedly entertaining film lurks an insinuating smirk on the verge of widening into a grin.
Fresh: Entertaining and full of surprising twists, this highly cinematic tale of a Copenhagen policeman working punishment duty in the provinces plays with genre in a manner that can be compared with the Coen brothers or David Lynch.
Fresh: Cedergren is a little too bland, but that works with Hansen's air of haplessness and sets him apart from the colorful locals.
Fresh: Terribly Happy, directed by Henrick Ruben Genz, is all moodiness, midnight black comedy and noir mystery.

terribly funny
This movie is terrific. The Apple store plot synopsis calls it a "taught [sic] noirish psychological thriller" which I suppose it is, in the same sense that the Coens' Fargo can be descibed that way. But it is first and foremost a dark, deadpan black comedy. Genz creates a village that might as well be on another planet, but instead inhabits the bleak desolation of the south Jutland bogs where the movie was filmed. Beautifully photographed, by the way, with a cast and dialogue that fit perfectly in that suffocating isolation. The hapless protagonist, who has been banished from the relative heaven of Copenhagen, thinks he has been sent to purgatory to do penance. In fact, he slowly learns it isn't purgatory, and he might as well have arrived in a handbasket. This is Danish deadpan humor at its best. I don't think a single character smiles in the entire movie, until near the end, when one finally cracks a grin, as he sits in a chair, fatally shot, finally liberated from hell. If you liked Fargo, do not miss this movie. It has a very similar sensibility, albeit with far less violence.
sllllllllllooooooooow
Apparently, movie reviewers mistake "slow-moving" for "moody" and "uninteresting" for "interesting if in a foreign language". Put this movie in English, and the ratings would be 0%. Terrible, glacially-paced movie. Awful.
