Plot Summary

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Howard Hughes, the billionaire, the filmmaker, the recluse and The Aviator. After inheriting his father's machine tool company, the young Howard Hughes discovers he can combine his passions--flying, moviemaking and women--by coming to Hollywood. In 1930, while building one of the world's largest aviation companies, Hughes produces Hell's Angels, a perfectionist's homage to World War I flyers. The man who eventually produces almost 30 films shocks society with The Outlaw, starring buxom Jane Russell, builds the world's largest airplane, sets the world speed record and invents the half-cup bra.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This almost-great epic has one foot in legend: it's a vision of an American titan that could have sprung from the insides of Hughes's own obsessive, perfectionist head. – David Ansen, Newsweek, Feb 3, 2010

Fresh: Sumptuously exciting, glowing with expertise, seething with life, gorgeously designed and thrillingly articulated. – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Its primary appeal is its speed: It rushes along, from scandal to air crash to movie romance to Senate hearing, each anecdote well realized but never tarried over. – Stephen Hunter, Washington Post, Jan 25, 2010

Fresh: By and large I think this movie's chief function is to give Scorsese an opportunity to indulge in the pleasures of big-time filmmaking and to treat the audience to a heady dose of glamour. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Amazing!!!

This movie, staring Leonardo DiCaprio is an amazing film. It not only has the perfect actor to play the part, but the movie itself contains a mixture of feelings as you watch it. At times during the movie you feel amazed and at other times you feel sad, however the movie as a whole is about a very smart man who not only outsmarts the best, but outsmarts the world's laws of nature as he sores through the sky. This movie, no doubt is one of my favorite movies of all time.

A Masterpiece

Martin Scorsese did an excellent job with his film.. I had to give it 4 starts due to some editing mistakes that seemed to have flown by Martin and his editing crew. Anyhow, Leonardo does a wonderful portraying someone with OCD. He clearly shows he did his research on how debilitating this mental condition really is. Buy it and I recommend doing some research on both Howard Hughes and OCD to really appreciate this film.

Excellent film

Leonard Dicaprio, one of America's most talented actors (current), gives a solid performance in Martin Scorcese's tastefully done biographical film on the eccentric aviation hero Howard Hughes. Some may find parts of it dragging, but I enjoyed every bit of it and watch it once every few months. If you are interested, take a look at Tommy Lee Jones as Howard Hughes in a much older film. That film also has some dragging bits, but great acting again.
