Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If it's true that you always kill the thing you love, then horror honchos Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have taken an ax to slasher cinema in The Cabin in the Woods and chopped it up for kindling. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Apr 13, 2012

Fresh: One of the best movies of 2012 so far, in any genre. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Jan 4, 2013

Fresh: For all of its many intellectual pleasures, and smart commentary, Cabin in the Woods is a visceral roller coaster of a movie at heart. And like the best thrill rides, when it's over, you just want to get back on and go again. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Apr 13, 2012

Fresh: By the time the ride is over, director Drew Goddard and co-writers Goddard and Joss Whedon will change course three or four times, nodding and winking but never losing momentum. – Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 4, 2013

A Genre-Bending Game Changer!

"Cabin In The Woods" is one of those films that could've chosen to be a simple cash-grab parody of bad horror movies. Under the wings of director Drew Goddard and writer Joss Whedon however, this film takes all the bad stuff of modern horror and turns it into something truly original and amazing!

Five friends go on a trip to a cabin in the woods. Things don't go as planned. That's ALL you're getting from me. The less you know, the better.

One of the best things to praise in this film is that it never takes any lazy routes in its presentation. Every chance this movie had to take a horror cliche' and just go "Haha, isn't that stupid?!", Joss Whedon writes it to where it's both immensly clever and scary. Drew Goddard shows that he's got an eye for both story and visual spectacle, making this a very promising directoral debut.

Another major surprise is that the characters featured here reverse one of the biggest problems of modern horror: unlikeable characters! In most horror flicks today, the characters are written in such a stupid, unlikeable way that it doesn't matter to the audience what happens to them. Not only were these friends likeable; they were also very hilarious, and actually had some depth to them. I wanted to see them all make through to the end.

I wish I could tell you more about this film and how fantastic it is, but any more detail would spoil the experience. Overall, this is one of the most original, twisted and exciting times I've had watching a movie. It fills you with fear, laughter and awe; with no holds barred.

HORROR HAS NEVER BEEN THIS MUCH FUN!

Fresh, innovative, and wickedly exciting, "The Cabin In the Woods" is one of the most refreshingly imaginative movies I've ever experienced. Once again certifying Joss Whedon's astounding genius, it raises the bar amazingly high for the entire horror genre, delivering laughs, thrills, and a story so cleverly designed and deliriously twisted that it makes everything else in the category look second-rate. During the first half-hour or so, it doesn't seem like anything special: five twenty-something friends take a trip to a remote forest cabin and come across some creepy guy at a truck stop who warns them of their impending fates, or something like that. Sounds pretty much like your average generic scare fare from the Hollywood assembly line, right? Well, you'd be wrong on that count, because once the curious youths begin exploring the mysterious cabin (and awakening its terrors in the process), we suddenly find ourselves in a deeply ominous situation where nothing is as it seems and every prediction you make is thrown right out the front door. I'm gonna stop right there so I don't give anything away, but let's just say that the remainder of the film is an insane ride you won't soon forget. I honestly can't remember the last time I've seen a horror movie this fun, original, and terrifying, if ever. Just about everyone in the cast delivers a pitch-perfect performance, especially Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, and Fran Kranz. The latter of which reminds me so much of a pot-smoking Shaggy from "Scooby-Doo". Perhaps the best thing about these characters is that they're all so likable. They have genuinely hilarious personalities and you actually do care about what happens to each one of them. Huge kudos goes to Drew Goddard, who directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with producer Joss Whedon. Not only is it a brilliant and groundbreaking achievement for horror flicks in general, but it's a total blast to just watch everything unfold right before your eyes. At the end of the day, "The Cabin In the Woods" is easily one of the best movies of the year, period. Elaborately constructed and hysterically over the top in all the right ways, this unpredictable fright fest is never afraid to take risks, pulling so many thrilling twists and turns that you'll hardly be able to keep track. With a film like "Cabin", just be prepared to expect the unexpected!

The One That Gets It Right

I was a little nervous about seeing this because the trailer looked good, but I thought it would like every other slasher movie where dumb people get killed off one by one. It's definitely NOT what I expected. It had the smartest characters I've ever seen in a horror movie, pretty good bloody moments, and I actually laughed a lot. Usually, horror comedies are stupid, but this one had the perfect mix of laughs and jumps and scares. And what really appealed to me was that the story keeps getting deeper and deeper as you watch it. Once you think you know what's going on, something else happens that makes you wonder and think. And that ending… wow. But anyway, I loved what this movie was trying to tell the audience. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with moral like this, making this the smartest horror movie I've ever seen. I don't even watch scary movies the same way anymore after watching this! But anyway, even if you're not a horror fan, I highly suggest watching this. If you wanna see a scary, funny, epic, and/or smart movie, look no further.
