Plot Summary
Inspired by Victor Hugo's classic novel, Disney brings the heroic adventures of Quasimodo, the gentle and lonely bell ringer of Notre Dame, to spectacular life. This critically acclaimed Disney masterpiece is an "uplifting, thrilling story with a heart-touching message that emerges from the comedy and song" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). At the urging of his hilarious gargoyle pals Victor, Hugo, and Laverne, Quaismodo leaves the solitary safety of his tower, venturing out to find his first true friend, the gypsy beauty Esmerelda. The most unlikely of heroes, Quasi fights to save the people and the city he loves and, in turn, helps us to see people for who they are, rather than how they appear. The star-studded voice cast includes Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, and Demi Moore in a magnificent Disney musical from renowned composer Alan Menken.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The latest and most uncertain of Disney's animated efforts, with its manic mood swings and cloying, none-too-cuddly hero.
Fresh: It's an emotionally rounded fairy tale that balances darkness and sentimentality, pathos and triumph, with uncanny grace.
Fresh: The result is a grand cartoon cathedral, teeming with gargoyles and treachery, hopeless love and tortured lust.
Fresh: This is pretty sophisticated for so-called kid stuff.

"Who is the monster and who is the man?"
Of all the Disney movies I've seen (and that's many, considering I was born and raised a Disney fan) this is the one that has remained with me all these years. At first glance it's nothing more than a tragic, beautiful story of acceptance and redemption; but upon further retrospect and deeper dissection one can find the moral lessons that are to be learned. From the music to the fine details of the Gothic architecture, this movie is sensational in all areas. It not only challenges the viewer to look deeper into themselves but to take a step back and challenge themselves as a moral being. I had someone tell me that they didn't appreciate this movie because they felt it was attacking the Christian/Catholic religion - but I must disagree. This entire movie does revolve around Frollo and his evil, corrupt ways; this historically documents the power (and at times, corruption) of the Catholic church back-in-the-day. But I greatly believe this movie captures the beauty and love that is God's. The Hunchback of Notre Dame has so much to offer our children and our adult selves - it may be an animated film done by Disney, but that does not mean its magical capabilities and wondrous foundation cannot continue to move us to this very day.
Disney's Sleeper
When I first saw the movie, when I was about 10, I was almost overwhelmed by the intensity of the film. Although I could understand the base themes of the movie ( looks and power arent everything, etc.) and the basic religious overtones, I truly didn't understand the depth of the themes within the movie. I have always felt that this was Disney's most intense animated movie, from start to finish, and I still do. The music, voice acting, subtle and not-so subtle humor, and overall story are all wonderful. Its definetly one of my top 5 Disney animated movies. As it was one of the last of the grand musicals from Disney, they certainly went out with a bang. 4 1/2 stars.
why only to rent?!?!?!?!?
it made me so sad that you can only rent this movie because it's my favorite disney movie ever! why do we get to have Mulan, the little mermaid and the great mouse detective, but we can't have the hunchback of notre dame?!!?!?!? that is sooooo unfair :(
