Plot Summary

A team of high-class thieves avenge their mentor's death — with the help of his own daughter — in this big-budget remake of the 1969 British caper classic. The Italian Job stars Mark Wahlberg as Charlie, the mastermind of a daring Venice heist overseen by John (Donald Sutherland), a lifelong criminal who plans to retire from the fold with the earnings from his most recent take. Basking in the glow of a job well done at a secluded retreat in the Alps, the thieves — including the aptly-named Handsome Rob (Jason Statham), tech-geek Lyle (Seth Green), and hearing-impaired quipster Left Ear (Mos Def) — are ruthlessly double-crossed by one of their own, the taciturn, calculating Steve Frezelli (Edward Norton). Time passes and each member of the group finds himself pursuing other opportunities in the States, until Charlie rallies them together for a revenge-motivated scheme designed to bilk Steve of all his misbegotten earnings. In order to cinch the deal, he even enlists John's reluctant safecracking-prodigy daughter, Stella (Charlize Theron), for an elaborate, incognito Los Angeles heist. But the paranoid Steve proves himself to be one step ahead of them at just about every turn, and Charlie finds that he'll have to make some daring last-minute changes to their plan if the team is to succeed. The Italian Job marked director F. Gary Gray's second 2003 release after the Vin Diesel vehicle A Man Apart.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A tricked-out remake of a heist flick that was already flat and formulaic in 1969. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: This is pure entertainment but smart entertainment, plotted and executed with invention and humor and acted by a winning cast radiating good-movie energy. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A strangely satisfying though completely preposterous caper movie. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: This one offers some agreeably mindless fun in which the villains (including Norton) are truly villainous, the payback is satisfying in a purely infantile way, and the familiarity of everything is oddly comforting. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Mini Coopers+$37 Million in Gold+Charlize Theron= AMAZING!

Alright, I've always seen this movie sitting on the shelves of the video store, but I would just pass it over. Those were my stupid days. Finally, when I saw this in iTunes, I decided to get it. Smartest decision I've ever made. The Italian Job is amazing! It's packed with action and suspense from start to finish. Mark Whalburg and Charlize Theron (along with all the other actors) do an amazing and believable job of portraying their characters. The story however, is probably what makes this movie so great. A group of master-mind thiefs execute the perfect heist and snatch the ultimate prize. $37 million in gold bricks! But everything goes wrong when one of their own turns on them and takes all the gold for himself. One year later, the remaining members of the squad discover where their traitor is hiding and after teaming up with their former leader's daughter, the head out for revenge. This is probably the best movie in iTunes so far, and the price is surprisingly low.

wow.......what a great movie...

OMG WHAT great movie. This is a very good movie, with a great plot, some very well thought out characters, and overall a great sense of action and suspense combined into one. The whole movie from beginning to end has a great balance of pure action, and great story telling. You never get the feeling that its just another over the top pointlessly violent action movie, but you wont get lost into a complex leave you way behind plot either. Another plus is that I have seen this movie around 7 or 8 times, and I would watch it again. It is one of those movies that is great over and over again, so overall I would recommend this movie in any form, but especially for your ipod.

Mark Whalberg at his best.

This is a great movie. It has great plots, the price is fantastic, and has some of the greatest acting anywhere. The Italian Job: one of the best movies ever made.
