Plot Summary

Vincent Price stars as an obsessed doctor who discovers that fear manifests itself as a parasitic creature which grows on the spinal cords of terrified people. If they scream, the Tingler can be destroyed. If they don't, it will sever the spinal column and kill them. He successfully isolates and removes the Tingler from a deaf mute (Judith Evelyn) who has been scared to death by her devious husband. Once captured, the Tingler escapes and runs amok in a crowded movie theater. Terror is loose, but can it be stopped? The Tingler is legendary horror director William Castle's magnum opus. After the success of The House on Haunted Hill, Castle devised a new gimmick called "Percepto" for the Tingler. Participating theaters would wire seats so that random moviegoers would get a tangible electric shock during climactic moments in the film. Another novelty used to maximum effect is the short color sequence depicting blood pouring from a faucet and filling a bathtub. Castle went on to direct more cult classics like Homicidal and 13 Ghosts and gained some mainstream credibility by producing Rosemary's Baby.

Customer Reviews

I haven't watched the movie, but here's an interesting fact...

(I'm rating it three stars because I haven't seen it and I have no opinion on the movie. I just wanted to share this interesting fact.) Okay, when this was first put into theaters the director asked if he could put button activated buzzers under the audiences chairs. The director would sit in the back and when it got to where the movie says that the creature escaped into a movie theater, he would push random buttons and freak people out. They thought the tingling under their butts was the tingler crawling into their spine. The person would scream to "make the creature stop" and that would scare the other people into being actually afraid of the movie. The audience would then say it was scary, not because of the movie, but because of the "Creature".

Feet up on the Seat

When I was a kid, I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. After watching it though, every time I went the movies after that, I had to put my feet up on the seat 'cause that Tingler thing might be walking around. I had to do the same with my blankets at night, wrapping them around my neck so the Vampires couldn't bite me when I was sleeping. OK it's kinda hokey today, but back then, this was scaaarry.

5 STARS FOR SURE!!!!!

This is one of my favorite horror movies! It's amaaaazing, you should buy this!
