Plot Summary

This extended cut version includes 26 minutes of additional footage not seen in theaters! Ben Affleck follows his acclaimed "Gone Baby Gone" directorial debut by directing, co-writing and starring in a taut thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope and escaping a past that has no future. He plays Doug MacRay, leader of a Boston bank robber gang but not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves. When Doug falls into a passionate romance with the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) briefly taken hostage in their last heist, he wants out of this life and out of the town. As the Feds close in and the crew questions his loyalty, he has one of two choices: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves. Featuring: Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Titus Welliver, Pete Postlethwaite and Chris Cooper.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Essential viewing for connoisseurs of dropped r's, close-cropped hair and aerial views of the city that used to call itself the hub of the universe. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Sep 17, 2010

Fresh: Affleck's direction is clipped when the plot requires, but he lingers on character-driven scenes (at a garden, a restaurant, a corner) in no apparent rush. Why hurry, after all? He's arrived. – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle, Sep 17, 2010

Fresh: As a director, Affleck now has two home runs in two at-bats. This is one of the best movies of the year. – Richard Roeper, Richard Roeper.com, Sep 21, 2010

Fresh: As far as a developing directing talent goes, The Town is to Ben Affleck what Pulp Fiction was to Quentin Tarantino. It's that good. – Jim Schembri, The Age (Australia), Oct 22, 2010

More Fleshed Out.

Ben Affleck shows that the success of his directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone definitely wasn't a fluke. He also shows that he makes good casting decisions. I was surprised when I first saw The Town advertised that it acted like it was such an all-star cast, when I only recognized Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Chris Cooper, but with the success of Mad Men and Gilmore Girls, I guess Jon Hamm and Blake Lively are stars now. If Blake Lively doesn't get Oscar nomination then I officially lost respect for the Academy. Some of the stuff added into the Extended Cut is great, however, it's understandable that it was taken out. For example, Claire asking Doug why his parents don't live in Charlestown anymore twice, and Doug starting to use Oxy again doesn't really make sense without a relapse. This does not mean the Extended Cut isn't worth buying because the extra scenes are good as far as character development goes. It's more about everyone, not just Doug. Jon Hamm no longer seems like an antagonist, he just wants to do his job right. There's a little more on the former relationship between Doug and Krista. Overall, (even though it's disappointing that it is only on Blu-Ray) the Extended Cut is a good buy even though the theatrical cut is equally awesome. Now if only they had the digital copy of the Extended Cut on the Blu-Ray that I got for Christmas.

AMAZING FILM

Probably the best movie I have ever seen. Ben Affleck does an amazing job directing this movie and acting in it. The roles played by Jeremy Renner, Ben Affleck, John Hamm, Rebecca Hall, and "Slaine" are all stupendous. This movie is a MUST SEE!!!
