Plot Summary

In this hilarious comedy, Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel, Tropic Thunder) is an unusually intense teenager who believes, with an incredible sense of purpose, that his name defines his destiny. Like his "namesake" Leon Trotsky, the celebrated Russian revolutionary and socialist theorist, Leon must do all he can--using his handy flash cards-to throw off the mantle of the rich and the privileged class. When Leon's father (Saul Rubinek, Warehouse 13) gives his son a part-time job at the family clothing factory and within a day Leon is leading his fellow workers in a sit-down strike, he is punished by being sent to public school. There the would-be revolutionary finds new ways to battle fascism-represented by Principal Berkhoff (Colm Feore, 24) and Mrs. Davis (Domini Blythe), a teacher eager to give her students detention. Leon's pursuit of social justice leads him to Frank (Michael Murphy, X-Men: The Last Stand), a burned-out activist turned college professor, and Frank's thesis student, named Alexandra (Emily Hampshire) like Trotsky's great love, who Leon believes to be his future bride.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Runs 20 minutes too long and several rungs above the head of its target audience. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Tierny's script is smart and funny although some of the jokes are likely over the heads of a teen audience, who may not be up on their Russian revolutionary lore. – Linda Barnard, Toronto Star, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Fitfully charming and sitcom cute. – Stephen Cole, Globe and Mail, Jul 7, 2010

Great movie

I really loved this movie. Jay does a fantastic job of playing the Canadian version of Ferris Bueller. His character, Leon Bronstein, while psychotically idealistic is also entirely endearing. I loved it so much, I purchased it to add to my newly acquired Jay Baruchel collection.

wait for it to come on cable unless you've seen everything else.

The actors did just fine. The movie is just dumb to me. A high school kid thinks he's the reincarnation of a revolutionist and he need's to change the world. Guess what they made it into a two hour comedy that doesn't deliver. trust me I watched it till the end hoping it turned around into a funny or good movie. Then again this might just be what a wants to watch these days. I would look somewhere else for real humor and plot.
