Plot Summary

On January 3, 1889 in Turin, Italy, Friedrich Nietzsche steps out of the doorway of number six, Via Carlo Albert. Not far from him, a cab driver is having trouble with a stubborn horse. The horse refuses to move, whereupon the driver loses his patience and takes his whip to it. Nietzsche puts an end to the brutal scene, throwing his arms around the horse’s neck, sobbing. After this, he lies motionless and silent for two days on a divan, until he loses consciousness and his mind. Somewhere in the countryside, the driver of the cab lives with his daughter and the horse. Outside, a windstorm rages. Immaculately photographed in Tarr’s renowned long takes, The Turin Horse is the final statement from a master filmmaker.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Displays Mr. Tarr's uncompromising, atavistic commitment to darkness, difficulty and lapidary pictorial sublimity. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Feb 9, 2012

Fresh: Starkly beautiful and exceedingly demanding, "The Turin Horse," which Hungarian master Bela Tarr has said will be his last film, is both easy and impossible to define. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Mar 1, 2012

Fresh: Tarr, who is only 56, claims The Turin Horse as his last film, and it's hard to imagine a follow-up. – Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice, Feb 7, 2012

Fresh: The Turin Horse is an absolute vision, masterly and enveloping in a way that less personal, more conventional movies are not. The film doesn't seduce; it commands. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Feb 9, 2012

Turin Horse

One should be paid to watch this! I made it to the 47 min mark out of 2 and 1/2 hours and was completely annoyed .

Incredible Experience

In all fairness this isn't a film for everyone, and that is OK. Film is one of the richest, potentially most complex experiences with art anyone can share- it touches on almost every field of experience, but where it confounds most is our understanding and relationship with time. This film isn't escapist; it isn't entertainment- it is confrontation; it is mysterious and it is exceptional. There is plenty of cinema in the wings waiting to entertain us- make us laugh, cry, etc… The cinema of Bela Tarr elevates without alleviation. It is exquisite, timeless, and ruthless.
