Plot Summary

When her husband (David Duchovny) was killed, Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) didn't think she would be able to summon the strength to carry on. Jerry Sunborne (Benecio Del Toro) is a heroin addict who was one of the recently deceased's oldest friends in life, but as a result of his addiction Jerry has lost everything that ever mattered to him. When Audrey discovers that Jerry is the one man who could help her move beyond the dire cycle of grieving that she has fallen into, her offer for him to move in with the family provides the addict with just the incentive he needed to finally get his life back in order.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Its deliberate pacing may put some viewers off, as will the bleakness of the subject matter, but it's worth seeing, mostly to soak up the complex shades of Del Toro's performance. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Oct 20, 2007

Fresh: [Director] Bier knows the difference between drama and melodrama. – Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 20, 2007

Fresh: Berry gives a riveting performance, but as a deeply decent man trapped in a hell of his own making, Del Toro gives the kind of career performance Berry gave in Monster's Ball. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Jan 3, 2008

Rotten: Things We Lost in the Fire is certainly not a comedy, but it is definitely mordant with its two Big Themes: Loss and Addiction, both treated in a singularly heavy-handed manner, for which I blame primarily Mr. Loeb's screenplay. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Nov 15, 2007

I guess I'm the only one

I was hoping to like this film, but I thought it was ridiculous. I didn't find it moving and I couldn't connect with the characters. The whole time was filled with extremely soft speech or shouting in rage. Aside from the likability of Benicio's character, I hated this film and felt that I had wasted my time.
