Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If the stories sometimes use Creative Writing 101 devices (like a quasi-prophetic homeless woman), the total effect is as spare and haunting as the film's arid, beautifully shot setting. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A collection of five femme-oriented vignettes that are not intricately linked dramatically but overlap characters, this observant, emotionally acute drama is distinguished by a pronounced poetic sensibility in its writing and visual style. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: What does it say when a picture like Rodrigo Garcia's lovingly detailed Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, which won the first-time writer-director a prize at Cannes last year, doesn't make it to theaters in this country? – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

one of my top 3 favorites of the past 10 years

yes, this movie is brilliant. it is a gem that has been overlooked and underrated and i don't know why. oh wait, yes i do, because it is intelligent.... really intelligent, complex, nuanced, whimsical, quietly honest, and honestly painful. the performances are stunning and flawless with the exception of calista flockheart who reminds me of a mosquito with big hair and wax candy lips. she is a terrible and annoying actress who is very difficult to watch. the rest of the movie and everything about it, especially the genius penny allen and her iconic and unforgettable portrayal of nancy, is like a gift that one should be very grateful to receive. even cameron diaz is subtle and memorable, and that's saying a *lot*.

Oh, OH NO !!! IF you Can stay away from this movie

What a big disappointment!!!
*It's not about how smart you are most people will get this movie
*The truth is - It was a total disaster just like "The Hours"
* I have never seen so many good actresses fail all at once from one film
* If you have any kind of depression or stress in life stay far away from this RETCHED downer
* I hope that ITunes would be willing to give me a refund for my complete dissatisfaction

If you are an intuitive person you have seen this... there is nothing unique about this film

Aaaaaah not even my Trash bin on my mac wants it - (command + Trash)

Insightful & Smart

It was nice to watch an insightful, smart film, something that is rare in Hollywood today. Saying that, the movie is slow and some may find it either tedious or boring. I found the dialogue to be refreshing and at times both witty and funny. The characters lives weave in and around each other and when the movie is finished you are left pondering each women's life and the new turns they might take. Yes, it's one of those where the ending is not cut and dry. It leaves room for you to make your own assumptions. All the same, it is worth the watch even if all you do is rent it and see it once.
