Plot Summary

In this Sundance Award winning film, two men each search in their quiet solitude to begin a new life amidst an unspoken need for encouragement and support. Martin Bonner has just moved to Reno from the East Coast, leaving behind his two adult children and a life he spent more than two decades building. Having recently declared bankruptcy, he's working a new job as a volunteer coordinator helping prisoners transition to freedom. It's Martin's first job in two years. Travis Holloway, a recently released prisoner in the program, sent back into the world with nothing, also finds life difficult to adjust to. The lives and stories of Martin and Travis begin to converge as they find that they have much in common. Their unlikely friendship blossoms but is put to the test when Travis betrays Martin's trust.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Eenhoorn (whose patient expressions here suggest a kindly priest) gives his character the shy charm of palpable decency. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Aug 13, 2013

Fresh: A mood piece, a character study and an exercise in poetic gesture possessed of a sort of evanescent, secular spirituality. – John Anderson, Variety, Jan 22, 2013

Fresh: This Is Martin Bonner takes a magnifying glass to everyday goodness and lingering pain, illuminating their contours and complexities but pulling away before the movie can ever burst into sentimental flame. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Aug 16, 2013

Fresh: Rigorously subdued in performance and tone, this low-key character portrait is distinguished by its empathetic honesty. – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter, Jul 31, 2013

One of the best movies you'll find on iTunes

One of the best things about this movie is how it takes two characters whose lives appear to be sad and weaves a story completely devoid of cynicism and pessimism.

I liked it

Really slow movie but it was nice once I stopped waiting for a crisis. I liked the star a lot, especially dancing to the song he wrote (see credits). Nice to have positive people in a movie for once.

This is Who?

I am amazed someone rated this film at 92%. The film shows nice raw footage of Nevada with the main characters who look like they are filmed by a neighbour. The plot is difficult to find; the movie is extremely slow and awkward.
