Not funny, stupid, terrible.
How critics and non-critics liked this is way beyond my understanding. I loved Pineapple Express and the cast is great. Either I'm getting older (age 22) or this is just awful tasting toilet humor and jokes done for the sake of shock value than genuine laughs. I can't stress enough how it is completely incomprehensible that this got good reviews. It was pure and utter garbage on so many levels. I don't think I laughed once throughout the entire film. The only thing that it had going for it was that I stayed until the very end just because I wanted to see what happened. Not funny, stupid, terrible, gag-worthy.
THE FUNNIEST, MOST UTTERLY RIDICULOUS FILM OF 2013!
Comedies don't get more surreally outrageous and terrifically self-referential than "This Is the End," in which a bunch of famous friends get together and basically play over-exaggerated versions of themselves facing a biblical-style apocalypse. But they also really don't get much funnier than this. Writing partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg ("Superbad," "Pineapple Express") move into directing for the very first time with this out-of-control bromance that finds some sweet, surprising resonance amid a constant barrage of vicious vulgarity, clever in-jokes, and end-of-the-world mayhem. And the result, despite being a bit rough around the comedic edges at times, is nothing short of gut-bustingly hysterical.
In this apocalyptic action-comedy, Rogen stars as himself, happy that his best friend Jay Baruchel has come to visit him in Los Angeles. Jay prefers to live at home in Canada, far from the plastic L.A. scene. So Seth sets aside the first day with videos games and lots of drugs. Then they head over to James Franco's house for a star-studded Hollywood party, during which a series of massive earthquakes eventually kill off many of the big-name guests. Seth, Jay, and James survive, along with Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride. And as they set up camp in James' mansion, the friendships between them start to drift apart. Mainly because Danny won't stop eating their whole supply of food, Jay is constantly complaining, and Jonah is simply acting too nice to be believed. Until he's possessed by an angry demon, that is.
The blinding array of cameos gives the film's very early scenes a terrific kick, as A-list stars like Aziz Ansari, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jason Segel, Kevin Hart, Mindy Kaling, Paul Rudd, and Rihanna hilariously spoof their public personas before meeting a fiery variety of ridiculously grim deaths. An especially spiky Emma Watson gets a few extra witty scenes of her own, while Michael Cera has the most fun as a crazed lunatic obsessed with girls and drugs. And Channing Tatum gets perhaps the most jaw-dropping moment of all. But it's our six insane "heroes" who hold the flick together from beginning to end, and their camaraderie adds a solid, surprising warmth, most notably in the central bromance between Rogen and Baruchel. While poking fun at themselves, these actors also get a truly hysterical chance to lampoon their Hollywood careers, with pointed gags at everything from "The Green Hornet" to "127 Hours." During their big apocalyptic quarantine together, they even have time to make and film their own sequel to "Pineapple Express." Rogen and Goldberg pack the entire movie with a ton of rapid-fire gags and off-the-wall sessions of improvisational dialogue, so even if an occasional joke or scene falls flat, another one is already making us gasp with laughter. Sure, much of the material is utterly stupid, as it should be, but what really wins us over in the end is the way the film simply wallows in the bizarre love-hate relationships these men have for one another. It's effectively endearing in its own creepy way, but it also grounds the nearly nonexistent story by making us care about these crazy acting buddies and their eventual fates. Not to mention the plot twists are blindingly random and the unpredictable finale is so utterly corny, it's brilliant.
"This Is the End" may not boast the most original narrative or firmly written script for an ambitious comedy blockbuster of its unique caliber, but what it mainly lacks in cohesive storytelling, it more than makes up for in rowdy, self-indulgent laughs and deliriously crude rounds of rapid-fire dialogue. Even the apocalyptic special effects and demon creature designs are impressive, so much so that they even made me jump out of my seat at times. So if you're thinking about renting this movie, just know that it's definitely not for the most easily sensitive or offended. If you're a fan of these all-star, in-your-face comedians and their ridiculously over-the-top brand of R-rated humor, I simply can't recommend "This Is the End" enough. It's a blast!
OMG …. This is not just awful … its pitiful
One minute of special effects and the rest is just these guys acting like total morons.
