Plot Summary

When Nazi troops seize his town, timid schoolmaster Albert Lory (Charles Laughton) submits to his new masters, although he cannot help but be inspired by the defiance of many of his fellow citizens. Then Albert is hauled before a tribunal, falsely accused of murder. Standing alone against the power of the Third Reich, this seemingly weak man then reveals an invincible soul. Three of cinema's most acclaimed talents – Laughton, director Jean Renoir (Grand Illusion) and screenwriter Dudley Nichols (Stagecoach) – unite for this moving portrait of the heroism of everyday men and women. The stellar cast includes Maureen O'Hara (Laughton's protégée and his The Hunchback of Notre Dame co-star) as the colleague he secretly loves, George Sanders as a covert collaborator, and Walter Slezak as a wily Nazi officer who holds Albert's fate in his hands.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It should have been stronger drama than it is. But for the points it does make and its concept of man as a continuing vessel for freedom's fire, it is certainly well worth seeing. It comes close, even if doesn't quite hit the mark. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Jean Renoir's 1943 film has its passionate defenders; the unfortunate thing, though, is that it needs them. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The best film of Renoir's wartime American exile is a moving tirade against Nazism that packs quite an emotional punch. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010

Customer Reviews

Classic WWII propaganda, but great performances

Produced in 1943, it is sentimental and stirring, corny and heart-warming. Seventy years later we can feel superior to the slightly contrived plot, which feels like a cliche. None the less, the acting is A-list, and it is still one of my very favorite movies, and the theme is still pertinent.
