Plot Summary
Cheyenne (Sean Penn of MYSTIC RIVER, MILK) is a former rock star. At 50, he still dresses 'Goth' and lives in Dublin off his royalties. The death of his father, with whom he wasn't on speaking terms, brings him back to New York. While there, he discovers his father had an obsession: to seek revenge on one of his Nazi captors who humiliated him during WWII. Searching for peace with his father's death and combating a mid-life crisis, Cheyenne decides to pick up where his father left off and starts a journey, at his own pace, across America. Also starring Frances McDormand (MOONRISE KINGDOM, ALMOST FAMOUS), Judd Hirsch (TV's DAMAGES, TOWER HEIST), and Kerry Condon (UNLEASHED, TV's LUCK).

Fresh: The plot turns are playful as well as jolting, and the visual shocks are gentle: a bison on the porch, the world's largest pistachio, Mr. Penn in his makeup.
Fresh: If the movie doesn't entirely get past its hard-to-buy premise, director Paolo Sorrentino does have the courage of his convictions, not just embracing every contradiction but spinning many of the story's contrivances into moments of strange, aching beauty.
Fresh: Penn is astonishing, creating a funny, guileless waif, infusing a faded celebrity figure with tactility and humor.
Rotten: The movie replaces emotional precision and intellectual honesty with syrupy sincerity and insistence.

loved it
one of my favorite sean penn films
poetic and moving
we all change, and thats what makes it strange... this film did not catch my attention for the first 20 minutes or so... however, once i removed myself from the campy awkward atmosphere painting and old rockstars current life.. i started to enjoy the art avenue this film takes.. it soon becomes strangely wonderful... poetic and moving...
Surprisingly entertaining.
What a strange and wonderful art house movie.
