Plot Summary

One of the finest British films ever made, this benchmark of “kitchen-sink realism” follows the self-defeating professional and romantic pursuits of a miner turned rugby player eking out an existence in drab Yorkshire. With an astonishing, raging performance by a young Richard Harris, an equally blistering turn by fellow Oscar nominee Rachel Roberts as the widow with whom he lodges, and electrifying direction by Lindsay Anderson, in his feature-film debut following years of documentary work, This Sporting Life remains a dramatic powerhouse.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Lindsay Anderson, making his debut as a feature director, brings the keen, observant eye of a documentary man to many vivid episodes without sacrificing the story line. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It's impossible not to appreciate the remarkable performances (both Harris and Roberts were nominated for Oscars) or the realistic rugby scenes that earned Harris a broken leg. – John Petrakis, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Probably the best crafted of the British 'kitchen sink' movies. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jan 22, 2008

Fresh: The film is raw and confident, but it's a little shallow, too. – David Jenkins, Time Out, Jun 24, 2010
