Plot Summary

Against the stunning beauty of New Zealand's rugged Ruahine Mountains, Peter Karena and his wife Colleen raise their six children on the thin edge between freedom and disaster. As Peter hunts, trains wild horses and struggles to instill in his kids the values of independence, courage and happiness (not to mention good hair), his escalating struggle with his own father has profound consequences on the entire Karena clan. Filmed over the course of four years, cinematographer Tom Burstyn's rigorously beautiful documentary captures the Karena's precipitous existence with equal parts glorious abandon and painful suspense. Trying to carve out a different type of life for himself, Peter often seems like a man out of step with this century, he can tame a wild horse, or field dress a deer, but he can't find a home for his family. As Peter and Colleen set up a series of makeshift camps, their brood of fearless kids rides bareback across the wild New Zealand landscape. Tragedy does not spare the Karena family - a near-disaster on a mountain trek, the loss of their home or scenes of small children getting bucked off galloping horses drive home the point that a certain level of risk, once taken for granted, now seems like it belongs to another century entirely. But ultimately, this complete immersion in another way of life reveals that the price of freedom is something that is well worth paying.

Amazing Work

This is a truly extraordinary film - absolutely stunning to look at - about people who've decided to go their own way. Whether they're the world's greatest parents - or absolutely out of their minds - is something each viewer will have to decide, but getting to know them and their children is more than well worth your time. Bravo.

Way of Life

A most vivid look at a real family caught in changing times. Beautiful humans, beautifully realized. Ultimately a moving look at truth. Art.

We Have Lost Our Way

This beautiful film is both tragic and uplifting. It depicts like as it was meant to be. The Karena family will be the envy of many. They might not possess a lot of material goods, but they are not lacking in respect for one another, for the animals, and for the land. I loved this film so much that I bought it and can't wait to share it with others. The trailer alone will rock your socks. There is a purity about their way of life that reminds us of how much we have lost along the way. Kudos to the filmmakers Sumner and Tom Burstyn. Please support this film and the book -- proceeds are shared with the Karena family. If you an arrange screenings, simply go to the website and inquire. You will get an answer. Making documentaries is probably never going to make you rich, but it's not about that, it's about the important message that it brings us. This film jolts us back to reality and when children watch it, it is my bet that it will inspire them to seek out adventures instead of being enslaved by electronic pastimes. The Karena kids are real and their parents allow them to be so.
