Plot Summary
Master filmmaker George Lucas ("Indiana Jones," "Star Wars" trilogies) makes his directorial debut in this futuristic sci-fi thriller. Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Robert Duvall ("Falling Down," "A Civil Action") stars in this story of a computerized subterranean world, where sex is forbidden and emotions have been eradicated. When one computer-matched couple discovers love, this perfectly controlled world is turned upside down.

Fresh: I have a good many reservations about the film's ideas, but they are greatly outweighed by my admiration for a technical virtuosity that by fair means and foul achieves exceptional emotional intensity at the same time.
Fresh: With political paternalism rampant at both extremes of the spectrum, Lucas is onto something. In any case, we'll know for sure in about a generation.
Fresh: The empty space surrounding the vulnerable man emphasizes the exertion involved rather than the goal of escape: like the hologram who came to life because he wanted to, THX finally achieves his humanity by an assertion of will.

Dystopian Future
If you really pay attention to what is going on in the movie, and start to think a little into it's meaning, this movie becomes very creepy very fast. It's hard for me to watch it all the way through, because you see a world controlled by 'big brother' to the extreme.
A Classic Sci-Fi Film That Deserves Your Money...
I haven't seen this film in years, so I can't exactly give a fresh review. The acting is very good. The directing is one of Lucas's finest -- in the genre list it has the artist as unknown, come on iTunes, you don't know that George Lucas made this? The special-effects are pretty good. Overall, THX 1138 is well-worth your time and money. It'll keep you interested throughout the show, and you'll love the ending and remember it for ages. Rent, and defiinitely buy this film.
The SECOND THX 1138
This was not the first time that George Lucas made THX 1138. He made a version while at USC Film School. Francis Ford Coppola saw it and funded the theatrical version you see here. The first one is interesting in its own right--It inspired FFC to jump start GLs film career after all--but it shows Lucas as kind of having just one theme for his work: freedom-loving good people oppressed by authoritarian rulers. Combined with his earlier student work, his Star Wars stuff and even elements of his Indiana Jones work (although Spielberg's superior ability to tell a story mitigates Lucas' monotony there) it becomes clear that he is obsessed with freedom and oppression. I found BOTH versions of THX 1138 to be creative and technically accomplished, but ultimately shallow and boring, a failing that he later sought to overcome with special effects and pyrotechnics. I'm sure he's a great guy, but a movie has to have more than craft to be good. I wish Coppola's and Spielberg's ability to put heart onto celluloid had rubbed off on the guy more.
