Plot Summary

Spectacularly photographed in Australia and hauntingly atmospheric in theme, Till Human Voices Wake Us teams Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential) and Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club, The Wings of the Dove) in a compelling supernatural romance. Pearce plays Dr. Sam Franks, an emotionally troubled psychologist who is traveling home to bury his father in the small Australian town where he was raised. It is an emotional journey that forces him to confront the memories of a long-ago summer that ended in tragedy - an incident that continues to torment him in his adult life. During the journey, he encounters Ruby (Carter), a beautiful, mysterious young woman with a secret past. Is Ruby real? Or is she a ghost - a manifestation - that Sam has created to allow him to say goodbye to a heartbreaking passage in his life?

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Petroni takes the poem at face value, turning diaphanous literary imagery opaque and literal in the love song of Sam Franks. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: All the intelligence and sincerity behind the camera and the talent in front of it, Till Human Voices Wake Us stays emotionally mired because of a static screenplay that fails to express its issues dramatically. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 30, 2003

Rotten: Despite being well acted and sweetly moving when it strips down to the tender poem at its heart, Till Human Voices Wake Us spends too much time playing to an otherworldly suspense that simply isn't there. – Janice Page, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: I'd recommend you actively or passively forget this one. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008
