Plot Summary

The outstanding debut from Gerard Johnson, Tony has been compared to classics Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Taxi Driver and is one of the most important and disturbing British films of recent years. Unemployed and unemployable, Tony is a sympathetic recluse with severe social problems, an addiction to VHS action films and a horrible moustache. Occasionally he snaps and murder is the result... Featuring a star-making lead performance from Peter Ferdinando, Tony is dark, brutal and bleakly amusing and will stay with you long after you finish watching.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Not cheery, but gripping, against-the-odds funny and uncomfortably unique. Johnson and Ferdinando are certainly now names to watch. – Kim Newman, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Not a reassuring vision, for sure, and no tourist plug for Dalston, Hackney or Haggerston, but the film's a fair calling card for Johnson's talent. – Wally Hammond, Time Out, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The problem is that there's no character development, no revelations and no epiphany. The film is merely nauseating. – Times [UK], Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Gerard Johnson's debut is undeniably exploitative and rather pointless, but enough red herrings get chucked into the mix to keep you interested. – Catherine Shoard, Guardian, Jun 24, 2010

Trying to be the next "HENRY"

Here we have a low budget effort put together by a creative group of British filmmakers. Obviously trying to harken back to classics like "Henry: Portrait of a serial killer" and other disturbing, psychological thrillers, "Tony" does a pretty good job. Good acting, good music, and a very subtle, simple style all add to the charm of the piece. However, there just isn't much... OOMPH! Tony does kill a few people, but we never know why. There's nothing about his background, no moments where he reveals what's going on in his head... He's just a quite, weird guy who we follow around, and watch him kill a few people. There's never really any suspense since we never get to know or care about any of his victims, and we likewise don't really get to know Tony himself... Needs more thrills!

Impressive

Not a big fan of horror films or anything involving a lot of blood, but the plot got me to rent the film and I have to admit, I was quite impressed by the story line. It's just brilliant. For a low budget film, they did a great job with casting and shooting. Films like this make you really want to appreciate the capability and potential filmmakers have. If you're into the whole mysterious, eerie, mind twisting plotted films, you should watch it.

TONY IS AN SIMPLY BRILLIANT

I saw this film at SXSW and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an incredible performance by Peter Ferdinando as Tony. The soundtrack is also excellent. Prepare to be shocked by this film!
