Fresh: There may be a metaphor afloat here - something about the folly of those who devour their own - in between some glorious imagery and what is finally a sweet little story.
Fresh: The narrative ... is mere scaffolding for Barta's richly realized world, a kind of hand-hewn 3-D cinema that's testament to the limitlessness of imagination.
Fresh: The movie is passionately retro, but Barta shows his methods can create a world every bit as engrossing as the latest CGI.
Rotten: A strange, and not entirely successful, hybrid of a kiddie story and dark, mature themes.

Fun movie!
This was a really great unique movie! The stop motion animation was very well done. I really enjoyed this one.
A Welcome Oddball Import
A film like this is very family friendly in my opinion, but it helps if you're part of the Labyrinth/Dark Crystal crowd and into foreign films. The mood is dark, gritty, and possessing a sensibility that might alienate a mainstream moviegoer. But it has an abundance of heart and charm. I still wonder whose statue that was calling the shots. He reminded me of the face from Darkness Light Darkness by Jan Svankmajer.
Rip-off Artist
It's a rip-off to Toy Story and all the other movies who do this.
