Plot Summary

Get ready to beam up to a galaxy where autograph hounds abound, dentists drill in Federation garb and the debate over "Trekkies" vs. "Trekkers" rages on. Denise Crosby of Star Trek: The Next Generation hosts this often-hilarious documentary about the Star Trek "fan-nomenon." Interviewing hundreds of devoted fans and such Star Trek cast members as Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Kate Mulgrew and Brent Spiner, the film creates an entertaining and endearing portrait of the landmark series that has touched the lives of people around the world.

A Bit Unsettling

As a big fan of the actors on the original series, and a fan of the entire Trek franchise, this did not really do it for me. The photography and sound were of relatively poor quality, at least on the iTunes download and the film is somewhat scattered and dull. The film loosely follows around a few fans (fanatics actually) interspersed with some interesting bit interviews with various cast members and convention attendees. I'm not sure if the film makers intended it, but the inference I got was actually a bit disturbing. Some of the people followed in the film have very obvious social issues, and a number of the interviews were troubling, because you are clearly moving past an engaging interest in the Trek franchise, through active collection and hobbies, and into a level of fanatacism that I did not find humerous because it appeared to be seriously impacting the ability of some of these people to engage in society. Like many, I have no problem if people want to dress up however they wish, but when they begin to pattern their life and social events as if they truly believe they are members of Star Trek, that was unsettling to me, and the interviews make clear a few of these good people have some real issues.

Star Trek fans will love it!

Are you a Trekkie or a Trekker? Do you even care or understand what that means? If so, this is a great little documentary to pick up from the mid 1990s. Some nice intervierws also with DeForrest Kelley and Jimmy Doohan are found inside. Narrated by Denise Crosby. It's a fun, revealing look into the world of the Star Trek fans who keep the spirit of the show alive through their own passion and time. While of course the focus is Star Trek I'm sure it's similar to other things that people are prone to obsess about. I'm a Trekkie myself, as is my wife, and we love this movie!

Star Trek Has Changed Many A Life!

The sub-context in this film reveals truths in my own life. Star Trek helped me dream big and beyond things of just this planet. My mind believes that anything is possible, even today in my late 40's. Star Trek sparked other imaginations too. The communicator is prevalent throughout the World, all inspired by Star Trek technology. The Prime Directive of Star Fleet should be adopted by These United States of America--the World would be less conflicted.
