Plot Summary

The government says there’s nothing to worry about – it’s just a problem with bears making trouble in the mountains and forests of Norway. But local hunters don’t believe it – and neither do a trio of college students who want to find out the truth. Armed with a video camera, they trail a mysterious “poacher,” who wants nothing to do with them. However, their persistence lands them straight in the path of the objects of his pursuits: trolls. They soon find themselves documenting every move of this grizzled, unlikely hero – the trollhunter – risking their lives to uncover the secrets of creatures only thought to exist in fairy tales.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A monster movie with a love for mountainous, tree-lined Scandinavian scenery and an even greater love for setting memorably ugly, hulking and destructive mythological creatures against it. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2011

Fresh: Successful on multiple levels, with a brisk pace, excellent location work and a strong lead performance by Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen. – Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 16, 2011

Fresh: Once again, material for a great short film has been expanded to feature length at its peril and ours. Still, this is clever stuff and surprisingly engrossing on its own terms. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jun 30, 2011

Rotten: It can't seem to make up its mind about whether it wants to frighten us or make us laugh. It does a little bit of both, to be sure, but not nearly enough of either to make much of a lasting impression. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jul 1, 2011

Seen it 5 times!

Love this movie, great acting and directing. Please stop rating movies because of the price, its a pre release!

WOW! So Much Fun!

This movie was unbelievably fun to watch! It drew me in from the beginning with its humor and its reverence to the Brother's Grimm style fairy tales that I found simultaneously intriguing and terrifying as a child.
I've been of fan of this type of camera work since The Blair Witch Project but Troll Hunter uses it much more effectively. You see the trolls and you believe they are real....seriously....just like in nightmare! That may be the best way to honestly describe this film....it's like a dream....a weird freaky dream that looks and feels absolutely real even though you know that this just can not be happening.
As great as the trolls look, the big surprise is how wonderful a protagonist Otto Jespersen plays! His character was perfect!

Nice Surprise!

I didn't know what to expect from TH but it really surprised me; and in a very positive way.

Having grown up hearing troll folklore, this was a real treat. I was very engaged with the characters throughout and having lived in that area (I recognized many of the locales), it really was a fun movie to watch. I had the added benefit of being able to understand the dialogue without the subtitles but the film holds it own despite the subtitles. (You lose some of the local dialect and sayings in the translation).

All said, I'll buy this when it becomes available! It's a fun movie that I encourage people to go see or rent here!
